This stone fortress was built to defend and proclaim William’s royal power. The Tower has constantly been adapted and improved to defend and control the country. A Brief History of the Tower of London

The Tower of London was constructed in the 1070’s by William the Conqueror. He had just won the war but was very afraid of rebellion. So, he began to create a gigantic fortress made of stone to proclaim and defend his royal power. England had never seen something like it constructed before. The castle was intended to not only dominate the skyline but also the minds and hearts of the defeated Englishmen. It took over 20 years for the Tower to be built. Most of the labourers were, in fact, Englishmen, although there were several workers from Normandy who were used to bring stone from France. The Tower has been home to several Kings and Queens and also houses the famous Crown Jewels. It is infamous for a number of royal deaths and tragedy. This massive structure has served as a royal residence, a prison, an armoury and a treasury.
